Antiques Roadshow guest brings Indiana Jones props to Valentines Mansion
An Antiques Roadshow guest who made props for the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade heard a valuation of £150,000 for the collection, the Liverpool Echo reported in "Antiques Roadshow guest speechless after six-figure valuation of 'iconic' film props" (external source).
The Echo said the episode was broadcast on Sunday 18 October, from Valentines Mansion in East London. The valuation was given by the specialist Stephen Lane, who said the total was "somewhere in the region of £150,000 as a collection".
The props and the valuations
According to the Echo, the guest said he and his wife had made props for 41 years at Shepperton Studios, including the Grail Diaries, the Grail cup and the Cross of Coronado. He brought 60 pages from the Grail Diary and a prototype of the Holy Grail cup, which the Echo said did not appear in the film.
The Echo reported that Lane valued each of the cups at between £5,000 and £10,000, and each Cross of Coronado at between £3,000 and £6,000 at auction. It said he put the 60 diary pages at about £2,000 a page.
Lane described the diary as one of the most significant props in the film. The Echo quoted him as saying "it drives the plot, it delivers clues, it creates mystery".
The guest's reaction
The Echo said the guest became emotional as he paid tribute to his wife. "My wife and I did this for 41 years," he said, according to the report, adding that without her none of it would have happened.
The Echo said Lane remarked that the artwork was still together as a collection. Antiques Roadshow is available on BBC iPlayer.
