Petworth has more than 30 antique dealers, AOL UK reports

Petworth in West Sussex has more than 30 art and antique dealers on its high street, AOL UK reported in "Charming UK village full of antique shops has a beautiful national park on doorstep" (external source).

The article said the town is reported to be the only place outside London with "over 30 art and antique dealers within a single-mile radius". It described the town as sitting on the edge of South Downs National Park.

Antique shops and independent traders

AOL UK said the town is made up of cobbled lanes lined with antique shops, clothes boutiques, bookshops, gift shops and stationery stores. It said it is estimated that 98 per cent of the shops and cafes in Petworth are independently owned.

The article said Petworth Antiques Market is "where you'll find the bulk of dealers". It named limited edition books, furniture and decor among the items on offer.

Walks and Petworth House

According to AOL UK, circular walking routes start from the town and enter the national park. It listed the Petworth Housekeepers Tour, the trail down to Shimmings Valley, routes to Pulborough and the 10-mile Midhurst and Duncton Mill Walk.

The article also described Petworth House, a 17th century National Trust property with a fine art collection that includes work by Van Dyck and Turner. It said the house holds the earliest English globe in existence, dating to 1592, and has a 700-acre deer park.
